Wedding Cakes
Wedding cakes are so much of an attraction at weddings, often nearly on a par with the bride and groom as the centre of attention. They are almost always provided with their own special table - turning them into a focal point in their own right. Therefore, even wedding couples on a very strict budget rarely settle for mediocre wedding cake decoration. But economies can be made if a wedding cake is a sponge cake and not a fruit cake. But whether your wedding cake is to be made of sponge or fruit, what truly matters (apart from the delightful taste of the cake) is the cake decoration.
“Off the shelf”, relating to wedding cakes, sometimes conjures up a picture of something very bland and ordinary. This is usually far from the case. And in fact, “off the shelf” is often a necessity for couples who only have a short time in which to make their wedding plans. Many wedding cake makers supply superb readily prepared wedding cakes. Many of their designs are particularly inspirational – as they have the freedom to use just their own creative talents and initiative. And they will have had more time to consider the overall finished appearance of their wedding cake.
Fruit cakes are renowned for their longevity - and therefore there is no reason why a wedding fruit cake needs to be baked near the wedding date. It can be baked months, or even years, in advance of a wedding. For wedding couples who have the good fortune to have a willing family member, or friend, who is a more than capable of making a fruit cake, the wedding cake can then be decorated at a future date by a professional wedding cake designer. The wedding cake decoration must never appear amateurish. Unless someone you know has a flair for such things, - if possible, always try and seek out artistic professional cake decorators for the decoration of your cake.
A quality fruit wedding cake, or sponge wedding cake, becomes a sight to behold - when its top and sides are handcrafted with inspiration, by a wedding cake decorator, in traditional sugar flowers, or novelty sugar cats, or anything which the bride and groom requests for its decoration. These cakes may be decked with fresh flowers, or silk flowers and ribbons. It may be that a bride and groom wish for a single tier for the special cake for their wedding.
Other wedding couples prefer to opt for a 2-tier, 3-tier, 4-tier or even 5-tier wedding cake – and then the pillars can become “eye-candy” also. But whether you choose a single tier or several tiers for your wedding cake, the bespoke wedding cake decorator will be happy to be following your guidelines for the cake decoration. Their designs are “the icing on the cake”.
